What are the laws regarding pet ID tags?
Hello,
I know laws aren't the same in every area, but I am wondering what is usually required regarding Dog ID tags. Do They just need a name and a way to contact me? Proof of vaccinations? A medical tag?
I live in Michigan if that helps
Thanks!
Where I live, you need both a license tag with name and address and a vaccination tag. Both have to be renewed once a year.I live in Michigan also. I don't think that ID tags are required by law but they are a good idea to have. By law, the only ID tag that is required is a dog license. The dog license has a number on it and if your dog gets picked up by animal control than they put in the number on the tag and your info pops up. You have to buy a new license every year. Where I live, a license costs $ 7.00 before March for a spayed dog and $ 40.00 after March.you need a dog license which will have a tag, and its rabies tag on it. one with your name and number isn't required but it is helpful. In most places an up to date rabies tag is all that's required by law, and an actual ID tag is optional. Check with your local county to make sure (the county clerk's office should be able to help out). If you're not required legally to have a separate ID tag, then ask your vet (or whoever is responsible for providing the rabies tag) if their office information is included on the rabies tag - that will provide a way to locate you should your dog become lost, if the law doesn't require an ID tag and you don't want to place such personal information on the dog's collar.Where I live you get a 'Tracker' tag from your vets. You have a code which you establish with Tracker the company online. The code is embedded into the ID tag which no one else will know. You pay £3.60 a month for that. That's not the only thing you need though, and it isn't compulsory. You need an ID tag which has your telephone number on your postal/zip code. If dog goes missing you can be contacted but for the scum in the world....never put dogs name on as they will easily be able to say 'that is my dog' in the pound. Then there is the microchip. Which is more medical, just to prove it's your dog again. Really, the only reason is for contact reasons, and legal terms. If there's an accident.....and you say it isn't your dog, you will not pay etc.... proof it needed to confirm the correct owner.

Shopping for Pet ID Tags: Tips on Buying a Dog ID Tag or Cat ID Tag
Article by Dan Tags
A pet ID tag is a must for every pet owner's peace of mind. A pet tag significantly increases the chance of your dog or cat being returned to you in the event he or she ever gets lost. Every pet should have one, even "indoor" cats. Pet tags are available at local engravers as well as online. When searching online for a good pet tag, you'll want to look for "engraved pet id tags" or "personalized pet id tags". Searching for "dog tags" will undoubtedly bring up a litany of Military Dog Tag websites. There are five main things to consider when buying an identification tag for your pet: Price, material, engraving/lettering style, and personalized information. Price: A basic tag should cost no more than - some websites offer them for much less if you shop around. Of course, there are higher end tags available for those looking for a fashion statement for their pooch or kitty. One important thing to consider when shopping for price is the cost of shipping. Many websites will lure buyers with low prices, only to discover a high shipping charge (sometimes even twice the cost of the tag!) after the buyer takes the time to enter lettering specifications. It's best to use sellers who either offer free shipping or disclose shipping costs up front so that you can compare apples to apples without wasting valuable time. Material: Durability is of utmost importance for a pet tag. Metal is a better material than plastic because plastic tags are more prone to damage from pet chewing and other elements. Stainless steel and brass are very durable, but are not available in various colors. Aluminum tags are available in many colors and shapes such as dog bone, fire hydrant, mouse (for kitties) and more. All three metal materials are a good choice for your pet's tag. Engraving/Lettering Style: Printed ink tags should be avoided. If your pet is lost, whoever finds your loved one must be able to read your information clearly in order to get in touch with you. Engraved tags are the best for long term durability. In particular, look for diamond engraved tags rather than lazer engraved tags. A diamond engraver will have a deeper cut which will stand up to wear and tear over the long haul - not to mention it will look sharp! Personalized Information: The most important piece of information to include on a pet tag is your phone number(s). You'll also want to include your pet's name as well as your address. Keep in mind that pet tags are not very large, and you want the information to be as clear as possible - so limit your personalized pet tag information to the basics. Zip codes and brackets around phone number area codes and punctuation (i.e. the comma between city and state) are not needed. The fewer letters on your tag, the better the result will be. Summary: There are plenty of options out there for pet id tags. Just remember the most important things in your search are price, material (metal), and engraving type (diamond). And when you finally decide on a tag, limit the information to the bare necessities and look for free or low-cost shipping.
