you need a water filtered wet/dry vacI have a Dyson. They are a little pricey but work wonders with two cats. One being a long haired.I have the same problem and bought a phillips animal care vacuum,this works well for me only thing is you have to empty it at least every 2 days for it to work well.
It has a "turbo" brush which is great on carpets and another brush for hard floors.I recomend a KIrby i worked for them once in sales and they do ANYTHING. works great for pets and has lots of attachments. BEST out there i would say. Very expensive but lifetime warrenty..shop vac
