Best hip & joint or glucosamine supplements?
I've got two nine year old pit bulls, and my little girl is now having some trouble with her hip when she gets up after laying on it for a while. It takes about a minute, then she's fine. They're both still VERY active and play like puppies, so I'm wanting to start them on a glucosamine regimen. I got GNC pets Hip and Joint Supplements, but they REFUSE to eat them. I've tried hiding it in everything, and it's just not happening. To the point where I hid it in some wet food mixed with dry, and my boy just stopped eating when he got to the pills and walked off (he left wet food!), and she just finished hers, with chewed up pill laying next to the empty bowl on the floor. Considering my dogs are like little garbage disposals, they must really taste horrible.
Any ideas on any better tasting and effective supplements??
I buy the Kirkland brand (Costco) of Glucosamine HCI 1500 mg, with MSM 1500 mg. A jar of 375 tablets is in the $ 25.00 range. I just throw it in with dog's dinner. You are going to have to figure a way to get this medication down your dog's throat.We use to get Glyco-Flex III for our Bulldog with HD and Arthritis, and ordered it from KV Vet Supply. They were chewables and she ate them like a kid would eat candy. (she was also on Rimadyl, which is a prescription from the Vet, but also filled at KV Vet Supply)The latest research on glucosamine and it's effects on arthritis pain are not so great. In fact the latest and largest clinical trials show that glucosamine is no better than placebo in controlling the pain from degenerative joint disease.
The first thing I would suggest is that you confirm that you are dealing with joint pain. Secondly, make sure that your dogs are at ideal body condition. Excess weight makes things worse and speeds up the progression of the problem.
One supplement that might be effective is fish oil containing certain omega three fatty acids. Omega three fatty acids from fish oil have anti inflammatory properties and may do a better job of controlling the problem than glucosamine. There are even some Veterinary diets based on this idea.
There are other effective pain and inflammation remedies available from your Vet if you are really dealing with arthritis pain. It would be a good idea to have a physical exam and find out what is going on and how to best manage it.
